Shwedagon Pagoda during the Second Anglo-Burmese War in I852
'British
troops drive a Burmese army before them as they race towards Rangoon's
towering Shwedagon Pagoda during the Second Anglo-Burmese War in I852.
The soldiers were astonished to find the Buddhist temple, focus of the
country's religious life, covered in pure gold.'

Shwedagon pagoda in Yangon in 1950's. It is one of the highlights of all package tours to Yangon.
The 98 meters (326 feet) high pagoda built on a hill is believed to be one of the earliest pagodas of
Gautama Buddha era. It had been built on the Singottara hill more than 2500 years ago.

he inspiration: I saw this photo in v.5 of the 'Lands and Peoples'
series as a kid. I had no idea of the actual size of the pagoda - 368
feet high - or that it was covered in gold leaf! Kipling called it "the
winking wonder". I call it THE GOLDEN 'GOON!
